Champion rider James McDonald plans to ride in this year’s four-day Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington.
Champion jockey James McDonald has flicked the $7.5 million Golden Eagle to be a part of Melbourne Cup week at Flemington.
Australia’s best jockey is in Melbourne to team up with Zaaki in the $5 million Cox Plate at The Valley on Saturday.
McDonald will discuss Zaaki’s prospects in the weight-for-age showpiece in his exclusive News Corp column on Friday.
McDonald is yet to lock in his ride for the Melbourne Cup but Jose Santos, assistant to Ismail Mohammed, trainer of Away He Goes, told Horse Racing Planet the stable hopes to secure his services.
“We are waiting for a final answer from James McDonald,” he said. “We expect a decision at the weekend if he is available.
“We want to get the best jockey because we are really positive about the horse.”
Away He Goes has 54.5kg for the Melbourne Cup which would be the lightest weight McDonald’s ridden at all spring.
The international raider is the $15 third favourite for the Melbourne Cup with TAB Fixed Odds.
“I have to wait a few more days but I expect to have a Melbourne Cup ride sorted in the next couple of days,” McDonald said.
“There’s a bit happening. A bit of moving around, a bit going on.
“On Derby Day I’ve got Home Affairs in the Coolmore and Cascadian in the Cantala.
“I’m not locked in for an Oaks ride and I’ve got the champ Nature Strip in the big sprint on the last day of Cup week.
“I’m looking forward to a big couple of weeks ahead.”
